I came from two failed relationships, so I simply gave up and committed myself to a lifelong single life, until I met a computer geek. His name was Viktor, and at that time I was 22, he was 25. We were both studying Computer Science at the same university, Brock University, in Canada. When he saw me, I was by myself, and confused because of an assignment that I was working on. He asked me, “Are you in the first year computer science class?” and I said “yes.” Plus there was a conversation earlier about flying planes and he was interested in it, but I told him that I was not in the conversation at all since I had my headphones on. But after that little meeting, I never talked to him during the Christmas break. We never exchanged numbers nor added each other on Facebook.
January came and a new semester began. I was at a different computer lab (but it was across from the computer lab where me and Viktor had first met), helping a classmate when Viktor saw me just outside the lab. He asked me, “Have I met you before?” and I reminded him about the aviation story in the other lab that was told and me being along at the back of room where he saw me. He remembered and later asked me how I was doing. I didn’t stay much longer since I had to go to class later that evening. A week later, I went back to the same computer lab where we first met, and he came to the lab as well. When he first met, he was with his classmates working on a project together. This time, he came by himself. He saw me again, and he decided to sit beside me. This was the time we got to know each other more, we finally exchanged numbers, and added each other on Facebook. I felt much better this time. I now have his numbers and everything, and hoping that we could be friends.
It was Valentine’s Day, and he decided to chat with me on Facebook. He wanted to know what my hometown is like, and what’s good here. I simply told him that I always go to this Japanese restaurant, alone for lunch, and I remembered saying the word “alone” a few times. So I think he got the point, and decided to go to my hometown and have some sushi with me. Even though, I was a little late, I did have a good time. After that, we played video games, and that’s where he met my family for the first time. The second time he came over, I learned that he was from Hungary, and he moved 1 year after me, to Windsor. I was quite surprised to know that.
At one evening, I was at the university since I wanted to work on some of my homework. I texted him that I will be outside of this room where my other friends are, and he met me there. Then I said that I will be at the computer lab. However, I decided to change my plans of going to that computer lab without him knowing and went to another. I guess you could say that I was avoiding him so I could be by myself. I wasn’t by myself any longer since he saw me somehow, and decided to come to the same computer lab then sat beside me. A little later, he saw his classmate and it was girl. I thought that it was his girlfriend since they were talking together so I didn’t want to bug him.
Before I left to go home, he decided to walk outside with me to my car. Then he asked me this, “Would you go on a date with me?” I felt flattered and I didn’t know what to say. “Well you are kind of geeky,” I said. “Well, it’s a theoretical question.” I wasn’t sure what to say, but I said, “Yes”. The drive home after that was weird. I kept on asking myself, “Viktor, me? Me, Viktor?!” As soon as I got home, I sent him a text message “Are you serious?” He said, “If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t have asked you.” It took me a while to sink in, but on the next night we saw each other, I remembered my left hand was in a fist and so was his. Then his hand was holding my left, and when we both left, we were holding each other’s hands.
17 days into our relationship, some of Viktor’s friends were planning to go to a nightclub since it was someone’s birthday. That’s where I met our friend, Danielle, who is now known as “Fortune Teller Dani.” When I met her, she was very drunk. She was engaged to a guy named Tony, an Italian guy. This is what she said to me, “Clarisse, Viktor is a good man. I treat him like a little brother. When you two get married, I’m coming to your wedding.”
Two months into our relationship, and he had bought me a ring. He proposed to me in my car during a rainy day. Even though I took my ring back to get it resized, I waited patiently. The news spread like wildfire, but everyone was happy and excited. Plus Danielle added, “See? I predicted your engagement!” We know that we rushed ourselves into getting engaged early, but we think it’s for the better. There may be some rough patches, but as long as we have an open communication in our relationship, then there is nothing that should come between us. It does feel weird at times that I’m engaged to a computer geek, but he did admit that aside from learning to program a computer, geeks also learned to do other things, which is to love. I also learned that I shouldn’t judge someone for the way they are. He may be a computer geek, but to me, he is my prince charming.

(Screen) Name: Clarisse

For the last little while, it seems like I’ve been falling in love for the wrong reasons.
